What Happens Next? Five First Steps When You Find Out You're Pregnant

Finding out you’re pregnant can feel overwhelming, no matter what you were expecting. Shock, excitement, and fear of the unknown are among the most common reactions we see every day.

A lack of trustworthy information and resources is what keeps most men and women from feeling confident in their road ahead. Over the course of three and a half decades, we’ve helped tens of thousands of men and women in your shoes. Offering a steady hand to provide peace in your storm.

We encourage you to pause and take a deep breath.

We’ll figure this out together. One step at a time.

Here are five simple steps that will help you slow down, and make sense of what is happening:

1. Pause.

Realizing you’re pregnant can cause a lot of emotions, and those emotions might be all over the place. That’s normal. Give yourself time to feel all that you’re experiencing and process your emotions. There should be no pressure to take your next step immediately. Do whatever helps you process things best, whether that means journaling, walking, talking to a friend, or getting away to a peaceful place. It’s okay to take a moment to pause and reflect.

2. Identify.

Who are the people you trust enough to tell them about your pregnancy? The safe and dependable people who won’t rush to judgment? This can be family, friends, a mentor, coach, pastor, or counselor. You need a small group of people who will support you through each next step. This gives you the chance to share this with someone for the first time.

3. Reach out.

Many women who discover they’re pregnant are surprised to learn how many resources they have access to. From testing and support, to education and mentorship for both men and women, Resource Health is a dependable organization with five locations around the KC metro known for our pregnancy care. We’re available 24/7 to offer you compassion for every step of your pregnancy journey. Schedule an appointment today.

4. Verify.

One of the first things we’ll do when you arrive at Resource Health is confirm your pregnancy. We provide medical-grade pregnancy tests administered by licensed professionals. At the beginning of your visit, you’ll find a haven of support in all of our consultation rooms as we get to know your story. If your pregnancy test is positive, our nurse may schedule you for an ultrasound to help determine how far along your pregnancy is. Understanding your situation determines how we can best support you. If you would like to know more about us, check out our FAQ.
